Which ethical hacker qualification matters when you hire

An ethical hacker qualification shows that someone passed a defined test of skills. However, it says less about judgement and reporting, so buyers should check other signals too.

  • Signed written scope first
  • Senior ethical hackers only
  • Your NDA signed as standard

Common ethical hacker qualification types

Qualifications fall into two broad groups. Some are practical exams, where candidates must break into lab systems. Others are knowledge exams.

What an ethical hacker qualification does not prove

Passing an exam is not the same as testing your systems well. For example, it does not show how someone writes findings or handles a live production system.

Also, qualifications age. Therefore recent work matters as much as the exam date.

Your result appears here as you tick, so you can see what is still open.

Better signals than any ethical hacker qualification alone

Look at the work itself. So ask for evidence beyond the badge.

  • A redacted sample report
  • Who exactly will test your systems
  • The method they follow, such as PTES
  • How they handle authorisation and scope
  • Whether a retest is included

Questions to ask

Ask who will do the work, by name. Also ask how many years they have tested systems like yours. As a result, you compare people, not marketing.

In addition, confirm that nobody tests without a signed scope. The Penetration Testing Execution Standard is a common method reference.

Working with Truevector

Our work is carried out by senior ethical hackers only, and you meet the person who briefs you. Full engagements usually land between $35,000 and $120,000, with a floor of $25,000. The bounded External Exposure Review starts at $4,500, and its fee is credited in full against a full engagement commissioned within ninety days.

Also ask how the tester keeps skills current. Because attack techniques change quickly, recent practice matters. So training, research and recent engagements are fair questions to ask.

Ethical hacker qualification questions

Which ethical hacker qualification is best?

Practical exams show hands-on skill. However, no single one proves good work on your systems.

Is an ethical hacker qualification legally required?

Generally no. Authorisation is what makes testing lawful.

Should we hire without an ethical hacker qualification?

Possibly, if experience and sample work are strong.

What matters most?

The named person, their recent work and a clear scope.
